The 7 Elements of Art
The elements are the "building blocks" of art. This is the vocabulary we use to describe works of art.
Line a path created by a moving point, mark or object. Artist Paul Klee said: " A line is a dot that went for a walk." Lines can be straight (horizontal, vertical, diagonal, parallel, perpendicular), wavy, loopy, zig zag, castle, dotted, dashed, thick, thin, spiral, intersecting, curved, outline.
Shape a 2-dimensional, flat enclosed area. A shape has length and width. Shapes can be placed in 2 categories: geometric and organic.
Color the element of art that comes from reflected or absorbed light.
Value the lightness or darkness of an object.
Texture how something feels or looks like it would feel when you touch it.
Space refers to the emptiness or area around or within objects. Positive space is the part of the picture that takes up space (objects that have volume. Negative space is the area around the object. A piece of art can have a foreground, middle ground and background.
Form a 3-dimensional object or sculpture. A form has length, width, and height. Forms have volume and you can walk around a form. Examples of forms are cubes, cones, rectangular prisms.
