First graders learned about positive/negative space and they dove into this project with their typical enthusiasm! Students experimented with drawing all over their paper with washable marker colors and then painted them with water. Students traced their hand, cut it out and glued it to their marker background. Using metallic markers for sparkle, they added expressive lines and shapes to the black paper. The results were stunning!

This was a big project for first grade and they were very successful! Students used 12 x 18 white paper folded to make six squares. They painted the primary colors, then mixed and painted their secondary colors. They experimented with using white oil pastel under the paint as well as adding texture with scrapers as they painted. Students traced circles in each painted block and went crazy adding all sorts of lines around the circle to add texture. Lots of cutting practice for each circle and then glued them in color wheel order. They added details with the left over paper and drew background details with a black marker. The caterpillars were a great hit!
