Wassily Kandinsky made paintings inspired by music of his time. Students created lines that demonstrated rhythm and movement while listening to music of their time. They listened to "Happy" and "Let it Go" and chose to draw with one or both pieces of music. For color, they experimented with a variety of media, and then decided how they would apply color. Students used the medium of their choice to express emotion in their art through color.

This is the first year of art for this group of second graders. They were excited beyond belief when I arrived at their door with my art cart! The students learned about the element of art line. They were having a blast finding lines everywhere, even on their clothes! We even made straight lines walking in the hallway. Students drew their initials and learned to transfer them to the other half of their paper. They filled their shapes with all kinds of lines. Ask them about "mystery lines"! Students were excited to see what happened when they painted over the crayon lines with watercolors!
Whitman, C. (2009). Lines that Wiggle. Blue Apple Books: NJ In first grade we discovered that we can find lines everywhere. They are on our clothes, in our classroom, in our homes and outside. We read some ABC books on art and made a project which is aligned with the English Language Arts Common Core unit, Alphabet Books. Students learned to trace their initials and then added all sorts of lines and color behind their letters. We also read a wiggly story about lines!

Alphabet Soup: A Feast of Letters. Whitman, C. (2009). Lines that Wiggle. Fifth grade students reviewed lines in art. They learned that just like writers, artists "play with words" as well as materials. Graphic designers play with words to create logos, add emotion to communication and to send a message to their audience. They do this through their choice in typography. Students designed their initial and then filled it with lines to express themselves.
Lesson aligned with ELA Common Core unit "Playing With Words" Third grade students learned about when a line becomes a shape. They made a mountain of letters using their names. Students learned techniques to make bubble or block letters, learned about having a balanced piece of art and the use of overlapping in their art. Once their mountain was built, they added all sorts of great lines and patterns.
1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th grades, their teachers and staff each colored a square in our mural. There is strength in numbers! Hermes Panthers are a supportive community and we are reaching for the stars with our dreams. A representation of student dreams surrounds our Pablo Picasso quote.
