Lesson is aligned with ELA Common Core unit on "Playing With Words"
Students continued with the discussion that just as a writer plays with words by using figurative language, an artist can also play with words and the materials they use. We looked at some Pop Art by Roy Lichtenstein and learned that he was inspired by newspapers, comics and popular culture. We compared comic book art to Lichtenstein's art and discussed the use of onomatopoeia in comics and in his painting, "Whaam!". Students created a collage using symbols, colors and onomatopoeia.

We celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month! Students looked at the art of Diego Rivera. They had great discussions on how art can tell a story and that we can look for clues in a painting to try to figure out the story. Students filled their sombrero art with symbols and lines to tell a story about themselves! They drew with oil pastels, and were excited to discover what happened when we painted over everything with watercolors! I hung the sombreros down our main hallway interspersed with papel picado made by our art club. It was very festive indeed!
Lesson aligned with the ELA Common Core unit "Stories Worth Telling Again and Again" First grade watched a video of "The Very Lonely Firefly" by Eric Carle. We used the book as inspiration for another project with lines. Using construction paper crayons, we drew fireflies on black paper and then drew all kinds of lines to make it look like they were flying through the night sky! Click on the title to watch the video!
Second grade students looked at some famous paintings that show fall scenes. They eagerly discussed all that they saw in the paintings, as well as took note of the colors. Each morning, I trekked out in my yard in search of a diverse selection of green leaves that would make good prints. Students learned to create relief prints from their real leaves. They were amazed to see the prints left behind! They sponge printed the fall colors of yellow, orange and red all around their leaves.
