Beautiful butterflies everywhere! Second graders learned about organic shapes and what it means when a shape is symmetrical, like a butterfly. Students folded their large paper in half and drew half a butterfly. It is quite the challenge to get little ones to draw big! Once they were happy with their drawing, they traced over their lines with black tempera paint squeezed from a bottle and made a mono print. Next they added lines and designs to the wings with white oil pastel if they wished, and then painted with tempera cakes. Students could then add to the background with white oil pastel and finished by filling the page with paint. These turned out gorgeous! So proud of my second graders!

First graders are so enthusiastic about everything they get to do in art! We "built" robots using geometric shapes and then used lines to "make them work". They created springs, gears, bolts, wires, controls and all sorts of creative spare parts with lines! We discussed how we were adding details to make them interesting, just like we add details to our writing to make it interesting. Students brainstormed what their robot would do for them and wrote the sentence using a sentence stem. Just a few of the examples: "My robot will clean my room. My robot will play with me. My robot will make toys for me. My robot will bake me cakes." They also had a great time naming their robots!
4th graders studied Kandinsky's artwork. They made observations about the lines and colors they saw in the art. Students learned that music played an important part in Kandinsky's art. We discussed how line and color can convey emotion in art and made connections with emotion in music. Students drew lines to two contemporary pieces of music and within their groups chose the "best" one to add color. They looked at balance and variety as well as decided which one better conveyed the emotion they felt while listening to the music. Students were given a large variety of mediums to experiment with when adding color (they used their second page of lines to experiment). They absolutely love the day they get to experiment with so many different mediums! When satisfied with color choices and mediums, the added color to their best lines to complete their project.
Third grade students learned all about lines and balance. They also learned when a line becomes a shape. Students stacked up the letters in their names and in some cases used lines to help "prop" up their names.
Do you LOVE art? Art Club might be for you!!
Art Club is free and open to 3rd and 4th grade Hermes students. Look for permission slips to come home on Tuesday, October 6. Permission slips should be returned by Friday, October 9. This year art club is all about learning to draw!! Second grade made leaves filled with lines using crayons. They painted their leaves with warm colors. Resist painting never gets old. It is like magic when the colors glide over the paper except where they have drawn with their crayons. The kids always seem mesmerized by this process. They will paint a stroke of color and watch with delight as their line reappears. The students painted a background for their leaf using cool colors. They cut out their leaves, made accordion spacers and attached the leaf to the background. Our leaves look like they are floating through the sky!
Aligned with ELA Common Core Unit "Seasons" First grade students learned all about the element of art line. They practiced painting zig zags, wavy, bumpy and dashed lines among others. You would not believe the excitement when the paint came out! This is the first year of art for our first grade students. Our district does not have art in Kindergarten. Students learned how to hold a brush, gently dip in the paint and softly paint lines across their paper. After practicing, students painted their lines in a hot air balloon. We discussed the color wheel and painted between the lines in color wheel order. I thought they were excited about the black paint for the lines...you would not believe how big their eyes got when I brought in bright tempera cake palettes!
