Lesson aligned with ELA Common Core “The Amazing Animal World”
This was a big project for first grade and they were very successful! Students used 12 x 18 white paper folded to make six squares. They painted the primary colors, then mixed and painted their secondary colors. They experimented with using white oil pastel under the paint as well as adding texture with scrapers as they painted. Students traced circles in each painted block and went crazy adding all sorts of lines around the circle to add texture. Lots of cutting practice for each circle and then glued them in color wheel order. They added details with the left over paper and drew background details with a black marker. The caterpillars were a great hit!

Students in first grade learned about Leonardo da Vinci and all his inventions. They came up with their own inventions...like a machine to put all their toys away, or a robot to do their homework! Students used shape tracers, cut out their shapes and then added lots of creative lines to make the invention work!
First grade learned about two more elements of art, color and shape. Students have been singing along with videos about the colors of the rainbow, the primary colors, and shapes! You can find these under the "website" tab. We looked at some artwork by Piet Mondrian. He used lines, squares, rectangles and primary colors in the art we viewed. There was much excitement when we created our art...students were gluing and PAINTING!!
First grade watched a video of "The Very Lonely Firefly" by Eric Carle. We used the book as inspiration for another project with lines. Using construction paper crayons, we drew fireflies on black paper and then drew all kinds of lines to make it look like they were flying through the night sky! Click on the title to watch the video!
In first grade we discovered that we can find lines everywhere. They are on our clothes, in our classroom, in our homes and outside. We read some ABC books on art and made a project which is aligned with the English Language Arts Common Core unit, Alphabet Books. Students learned to trace their initials and then added all sorts of lines and color behind their letters. We also read a wiggly story about lines!
