Second grade students learned about positive/negative space. I had them create the same project as first grade since this was their first year of art as well. They used marker and water for the background, traced their hand, cut it out, glued it down and added expressive lines and shapes using metallic marker. They were very striking when hung all together in the hall!

Second graders compared and contrasted a variety of art depicting the west. We discussed how art can capture a moment in history or tell a story. Students learned how size and overlapping create the illusion of space in a piece of art. They drew three to five tepees and painted them with symbols to tell a story. Next they painted the background and were encouraged to experiment with the sky. We discussed how many different colors the sky can actually appear to us depending on time and weather.
Lesson aligned with ELA Common Core "The Wild West" Second grade learned about the migration of the monarch butterflies from North America to Mexico. They were fascinated that such a delicate butterfly could make that trip. We are also learned about the difference between geometric and organic shapes, symmetry and line of symmetry. Students each drew half their butterfly, made monoprints and learned how to blend oil pastels on the wings. We reviewed the difference between relief prints and monoprints. Lots of learning going on in art! The background was colored using texture plates and construction paper crayons while students patiently waited for their turn to print. They used their very best cutting skills to cut out their butterfly, put a line of glue down the body and decided where to best place it on the background. Second grade students looked at some famous paintings that show fall scenes. They eagerly discussed all that they saw in the paintings, as well as took note of the colors. Each morning, I trekked out in my yard in search of a diverse selection of green leaves that would make good prints. Students learned to create relief prints from their real leaves. They were amazed to see the prints left behind! They sponge printed the fall colors of yellow, orange and red all around their leaves.
Lesson aligned the the ELA Common Core unit "Seasons" This is the first year of art for this group of second graders. They were excited beyond belief when I arrived at their door with my art cart! The students learned about the element of art line. They were having a blast finding lines everywhere, even on their clothes! We even made straight lines walking in the hallway. Students drew their initials and learned to transfer them to the other half of their paper. They filled their shapes with all kinds of lines. Ask them about "mystery lines"! Students were excited to see what happened when they painted over the crayon lines with watercolors!
